While there’s a lot of joy and excitement around this time of year, the team here at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is gearing up for another peak in Koala admissions.

Summer in Australia is ‘Trauma Season’ for Koalas. Last December and January, Koala admissions skyrocketed, as this is when Koalas are travelling around looking for mates. Koalas like Moonbii, who was trying to cross a busy highway when he was struck by a car, leaving him severely injured.
We’re also seeing a massive influx of Koalas presenting with chlamydia – the leading cause of death for their species. Koalas like Keith Furban show up at our hospital suffering severe effects from this disease, including blindness, infection, and infertility..
